One of the most beautiful items on display inside the church is the millennium tapestry. Created at the turn of this century the tapestry is the result of many hours of hard work put in by the “Belmont Quilters”. Take a close inspection of the tapestry and the names of the ladies of the village who made up the Quilters are revealed, namely, Jennifer Rhodes, Joan Rushton, Margaret Smeaton, Catherine Horrocks, Anne Jones, Jean Coward, Maureen Smith, Angela Molyneux and Nancy Taylor.
The tapestry catches beautifully every aspect of the village of Belmont with individual sections given to the school, the old and new housing, the playarea, sailing club, village shop and garage, the dye works, the church and the sheep and hills that surround the village. Each of the individual works come together around a map of the local area the red rose of Lancashire.
Once completed at the turn of the millennium the Tapestry was exhibited at Blackburn Museum and was even entered into a regional competition in Harrogate. The tapestry didn’t win the competition but did receive the recognition it truly deserved with a write up in Lancashire Life!!
The tapestry belongs to the Village and is prominently displayed in the church drawing admiring comments from people who have never seen it before and a feeling of pride from those who see it on a regular basis.
If you have never seen the tapestry before please feel free to call in and spend a little time to take in the all the detail. At the back of church you will find copies of postcards of the tapestry…please feel free to take one.
So what happened to the Belmont Quilters? Well you will be pleased to know that they did not disband but along with Sandra Holmes they went on to produce another beautiful piece of work in the form of the Wedding Kneeler that is in church used by couples on their big day. Whilst not as large a piece of work as the tapestry the wedding kneeler is another work of fabric that includes a panoramic view of Belmont and includes the inscription of the words Faith, Hope and Love.
